What is Benzene?

Benzene is an aromatic hydrocarbon, and it is an extremely toxic chemical to humans. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) categorizes benzene as a Group 1 human carcinogen which means that many scientific studies conducted over 50 years have definitively concluded that benzene causes cancer in humans.

Benzene is commonly found in solvents, paints, glues, adhesives, gasoline, and jet fuel, and is used in both industrial processes and in consumer products.  It has been shown to cause cancer in the blood-forming organs such as the bone marrow.  Benzene causes blood related cancers, including Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, Acute Myeloid Leukemia, Aplastic Anemia, and Myelodysplastic Syndrome.

Prolonged exposure to benzene, either through inhalation or skin contact, can damage cells and those damaged cells can lead to blood cancers.

Consumer Goods Usage: Benzene is found in products like paints, adhesives, and plastics, posing a risk through consumer use.

Waste Disposal: Improper disposal of benzene-containing products can contaminate soil and water near waste disposal sites.

Industrial Emissions: Releases from industrial facilities contribute to environmental benzene exposure for nearby populations.

Water Contamination: Benzene can contaminate water sources, leading to exposure through ingestion or skin contact.

How Does Benzene Exposure Occur?

Benzene exposure can occur in various ways, primarily involving inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact. Here are a few ways people can be exposed to benzene:

Benzene exposure causes cancer by damaging the DNA in cells and producing mutated cells.  The mutated cells can cause overproduction of certain cell types or the production of too few cell types.

This can result in the body producing increased numbers of cells that cause cancer, called oncogenes, and producing decreased numbers of cells that prevent cancer.

This increases the risk of leukemia and other blood disorders, including Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, Acute Myeloid Leukemia, Aplastic Anemia, and Myelodysplastic Syndrome.
